Inside AZ Academy
Philosophy Statement
AZ Academy is built on two assumptions: all people are curious and want to learn as part of the life-long process of growth, and each individual is endowed with unique talents that shape this growth. It is believed that with the right support for exploration and with a learning environment that cultivates personal assets, all students can reach their full potential. To provide this nurturing learning environment, students at AZ Academy participate in a small group instructional setting that focuses on developing the genius in every child.

AZ Academy emphasizes the core classic subjects - language arts, mathematics, science, social sciences, and foreign language. In addition, students' natural talents are cultivated through additional studies of the visual and performing arts, science and technology, athletics and health, and citizenship. We make use of Gardner 's theory of multiple intelligences by teaching to a variety of senses and learning styles throughout the curriculum. In applying this philosophy to the classroom, we feel that individualized attention to unique learning styles and sensorial strengths promotes understanding and ownership of knowledge and ensuring competence in all levels of Bloom's taxonomy. This allows students to successfully move forward with a strong foundation and the confidence to succeed.

At AZ Academy, students have a team of support (an adult and peer network comprised of family, teachers, the administration, the community, and their peers) that responds to their developmental needs as they grow and change. The self-esteem of each student is promoted within the classroom and the school at large with the goals of creating positive attitudes about learning and encouraging awareness of personal responsibility. In addition, providing a learning environment that respects diversity and fosters creativity is key to setting the stage for student success, as it results in curiosity that leads to understanding, further feeding the process of growth. Addressing the social-emotional needs of students also ensures that academic pursuits are not hindered, so that students have the ability to reach their full potential in all areas

The AZ Academy Mission Statement
AZ Academy aims to develop the genius in every child through small group instruction and by focusing attention on the individual needs of its multi-cultural and diverse learners. We promote the joy of life-long learning as a means to success in secondary schooling and beyond. The educational program at AZ Academy is designed to support the physical, emotional, social and intellectual education of the whole child. This is achieved by endorsing healthy lifestyles, by developing creativity and self-expression, by fostering character development, and by encouraging academic exploration in an environment that respects the unique strengths of each individual.

AZ Academy's School History

AZ Academy is a dynamic small group instruction program that began in 1998. Originally designed to meet the socialization needs of a few home-schooled students, the program has captured the public's interest and as a result has grown steadily. The founders, Paula and Mauree Heller, have nurtured this growing program by maintaining the principles of small class size and individualized instruction throughout this period of growth. In 2002, AZ Academy moved to its new campus at Cruzana Manor, 36 Estate Orange Grove. Island Educational Resources, a sister company, has served as a tutorial/resource center for adults and children for over 15 years.
